I have a close friend who is in my country illegally and has been put in jail and will likely be deported. He has lived here for at least 5 years (that's how long I've known him). He's hardworking, honest, a man of great character. He had to go to court this past Monday for a traffic violation; while there, the police arrested him because of his illegal status. He has to spend 22 days in jail and then pay a large fine - if he is unable to pay, he will likely be deported.
In the midst of this, I have been considering our great American Lady Liberty. Within the pedestal she stands on there is a bronze plaque. On this plaque is inscribed a poem titled "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus:
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
I wonder what she would say if she could speak today?

I hope this slide-show
doesn't ignite any more flames of hatred for a country or its people.
Instead, i hope you pray for a world of people who are persecuted or
oppressed or attacked for any reason.

To my fellow kings and queens,
We are all blind. Whether it is by
choice or by nature or by attack - none or us are seeing clearly.
Shards of colored glass lie entombed in our eyes. They are formed in
the uncertain fires of past experience, future possibilities,
choices, and mostly life. Colored glass from colored sand. Made from
sand that enters our lives at different times, the first of which is
born into us in our DNA. Life provides the flames that transform the
sand into colored glass. They become the lenses through which we view
our lives, our world, our neighbors, our everything. Reds, blues,
greens, yellows, blacks, browns, and all manner of shades in between
and beyond. Our paradigms are as unique as any beautiful creation of
God. And they are as flawed as everything in our world since the
fall. In the worst of cases, we are more than partially blinded by
the glass, we are in the complete darkness of a blindfolded life. In
our blindness we pretend to learn. We lay claims of knowledge and
wisdom on ourselves and others; however, those claims fall on
foundations of ignorance. This concept should not be lamented nor
provide a hold for despair to cling to; on the contrary, we should
find hope herein. Hope that each of us will have our blindfolds
removed. That clues of the beautiful mystery of life will be revealed
unto us. Strange and sad how some of us clench to the bars and chains
of our own darkness and demise while freedom and light are an open
hand away. A hand called truth. Through my lens, a hand named Jesus.
Placing both our hands in the open one allows the other free hand of
truth to remove the blindfold. Walking into the sunlight from a dark
place can hurt your eyes. Light, truth, beauty they're all like that;
when we are accustomed to darkness, to lies, to ugliness the opposite
hurts and repulses us at first experience. In truth, real knowledge
and wisdom lands and grows from a solid foundation: soil, rock, and
the wellspring of life. Solomon, the wisest man, says that the heart
is the wellspring of life. In a healthy heart truth lives and
thrives. There was a man whom had his blindfold removed while
traveling a road to destroy a group of religious and political
revolutionaries. He then chose to join and ultimately become the most
outspoken and influential man of that revolutionary group. His life
and words have impacted and transformed billions of people since his
blindfold was removed. I cannot imagine the world had he not been
given new sight.
To quote a common cliché:
'crystal clear' - to view through a lens without color or cloud. Of
this lie we are all guilty. We are all guilty of this blasphemy -
to assume, at some point in life, that we can see or know or
understand in full any thing, idea, or being supplants God with us.
By revelation of truth we exchange large, dark glass for smaller,
clearer glass. The smaller and clearer the glass becomes, the more we
begin to see the world as God does. But never, in this life, will we
remove all the glass. In most cases we need the help of both God and
someone with better vision than us to exchange the glass in our eyes.
Divine intervention, then human assistance.
Proverbs 25:2 It is the glory of God to
conceal a matter, but the glory of kings to search out a matter.
Acts 9:3-19 As he was traveling, it happened that
he was approaching Damascus, and suddenly a light from
heaven flashed around him; and he fell to the ground
and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you
persecuting Me?" And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" And
the voice said, "I am Jesus whom you are persecuting, but get up
and enter the city, and it will be told you what you must do."
The men who traveled with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but
seeing no one. Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes
were open, he could see nothing; and leading him by the hand,
they brought him into Damascus. And he was three days without
sight, and neither ate nor drank. Now there was a disciple at
Damascus named Ananias; and the Lord said to him in a vision,
"Ananias." And he said, "Here I am, Lord." And
the Lord said to him, "Get up and go to the street called
Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus
named Saul, for he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man
named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him, so that he might
regain his sight." But Ananias answered, "Lord, I have
heard from many about this man, how much harm he did to Your saints
at Jerusalem; and here he has authority from the chief priests to
bind all who call on Your name." But the Lord said to him, "Go,
for he is a chosen instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the
Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; for I will show him how
much he must suffer for My name's sake." So Ananias departed and
entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, "Brother
Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you
were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be
filled with the Holy Spirit." And immediately there fell from
his eyes something like scales, and he regained his sight, and he got
up and was baptized; and he took food and was strengthened.
Ephesians 1:9-10 And he made known to us the mystery of
his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ,
to be put into effect when the times will have reached their
fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together
under one head, even Christ.
Besides choice and nature, we are under
attack - attack by an enemy, who comes to steal, kill, insult, and
destroy. The enemy has come in many different forms; one form has
been that of a snake. A snake covered in scales. An enemy coming to
steal sight and light. A man has his sight restored and
from his
eyes fell
something
like
scales.
May you put your life into the open
hand of truth and find sight, light, love, beauty, wisdom, and
purpose revealed unto you.

...Not the beginning of a joke, but the beginning of this evening's UGA @ Oxford Reunion Dinner at LOLA, a new restaurant in the A (that's Atlanta, for everyone not from the A).
Quick recap for those without this knowledge: In 2001, I spent a semester studying at Oxford University while earning my BBA from UGA.For a short period of time, there were 27 of us living in a house on Banbury Rd, Oxford, England. For the last 6 years we, on occasion, try to gather together (those who we know how to contact) for a mini-reunion. Tonight, there were 7 of us: Gwen Phillips, Natalie Cox, Jodi Green, Donn Cooper, Kris Stevens, Jamie (i forget Jamie's last name...oh well, she'll have to forgive me), and, last but not least, me. In case you aren't aware, I love meeting new people, mostly because I love hearing people's stories.Tonight was wonderful for me, because it was like meeting new people who I know and love already. Hearing where everyone has been, what they've done, what they are busy with now, and some of what they are hoping for in the future. In the midst of all the catching up, I had a moment of quiet awe, revelation, and gratitude - throughout my life I have met and become friends with so many amazing, brilliant, loving, glorious people. I am reminded that humans were the last thing God created before resting, made in the likeness of Him, the crown of creation itself. We are called to be holy, glorious, and pure. We are designed to be free, healthy, and in relationship with God. We are all unique and original. And tonight, I saw 3 men and 3 women who confirm my hope in the redemption of 6 billion. Not because they are all perfect, healthy, wealthy, and wise, but because they each showed me honesty, joy, compassion, and purpose. They are living well. I don't mean in the American sense of the phrase (wealth, pleasure, leisure), but the true nature of the phrase (i will leave it without simple adjective definition, it is far too great a thing to confine it to a few words). If you see it in someone, you'll know it without definition.
So, to my three lawyers, my future nurse, my environmental activist, and my aspiring writer, thank you for your lives and how you enrich mine. I'm claiming you as my own, because I was told that, 'wherever I find truth, I find Jesus, and since He is in me, I should claim that truth' - and I see the Truth in you.

Cash Rules Everything Around Me
Elohim, my God, owns all the riches in all the world. All belongs to Him. And yet, 13th FLOOR is in a difficult position because of financial complications. The whole story is long, complicated, and not appropriate for full disclosure in this public forum. The short story is that 13th FLOOR is in dire need of some miraculous financial provision from the King of Kings. I sure hope that we are not doing or have not done something that is displeasing before God that is keeping us from receiving the fullness of His blessing. I truly to not want to take 40 years to learn a 10 day lesson. We are taught that the love of money is the root of all evil. We know we need it, we know it's valuable, we know that it is powerful. We all know that money is a good thing. And it is also a vile thing. Nevertheless, 13th FLOOR needs a lot of money in order to continue bringing messages of hope, compassion, and healing to people all across the US. If you would please consider donating any amount of cash to help us maintain our course, we would greatly appreciate it. And if you decide you will give, please email me and we'll talk details and digits. Your help will allow us to bring hope to many more people. If you have ever experienced being without hope, then please help us to serve people like you, who are hurting now the way you once were.
Cash rules everything aroung me, but it does not rule me.

The American portion of the 13thFLOOR 07/08 team arrived yesterday, safe and sound!
However, our kind and generous US Consulate in South Africa, in their infinite wisdom, decided that four of our men are unwelcome in our beautiful United States. Elistare, Gideon, Rassie, and Morris were denied visas to the US. These four men are very important to our team - please pray for them...that God will open the way for them. Maybe you know a local or national politician, or someone who does, and would be willing to ask them to write a letter on the behalf of 13thFLOOR, AIM, Elistare, Gideon, Rassie, and Morris that may help them receive their visas - please help us get these four men to the States.
...and just for fun: Star-Spangled Banner
- O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
- What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
- Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
- O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
- And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
- Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
- O say, does that star spangled banner yet wave
- O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?
- On the shore, dimly seen thro' the mist of the deep,
- Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
- What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
- As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
- Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
- In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
- 'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
- O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
- And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
- That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
- A home and a country should leave us no more?
- Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
- No refuge could save the hireling and slave
- From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
- And the star-spangled banner, in triumph doth wave
- O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
- O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
- Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
- Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n-rescued land
- Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
- Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
- And this be our motto: "In God is our Trust."
- And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
- O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
- Francis Scott Key
fyi: For the 'obvious-impaired' - Although we only sing the first verse, the song actually has four.

In more than one way, I sense an immense storm is on the horizon. A quite literal storm, with rain, wind, thunder, lightning, hail - all the good things about storms that make it great to stay inside with a fire and a book or movie. But also, a storm of another sort -
one where we see winds of change, the thunder of long, hard work, the lightning that flashes from innovation, the hail of violent conflict, and the glorious rain of heavenly blessings. I am looking forward, with much anticipation, to the coming storms. Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one
moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is
what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and
shout as you did in Rome. Do your worst, for I will do mine! Then the
fates will know you as we know you: as Albert Mondego, the man!
